In the Islamic culture, curse (la’n) means to wish for someone to remain far from Divine blessing. This kind of prayer is found repeatedly in the Quranic verses as well as universal and particular hadiths, in the practical sirah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), the Commander of the Faithful (PBUH), and the Household of the Holy Prophet (PBUT). Also, there is, in many cases, curse in the literature of Sunni and Shi’i scholars. Ordinary scholars have made some attempts to vindicate those who have been cursed by the Holy Quran, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the Imams (PBUT). Arguments presented for exoneration, however, seem to be unfounded.
