Abstract
n Islamic studies, Imamate is a foundational and determinative question that has received sustained attention in exegesis, hadith, theology, and mysticism. This study uses a semantic approach to analyze the terms imam, alim (knower), and hujja (divine proof), each of which substantially shapes the conception of Imamate. The inquiry proceeds through historical, hadith-based, and theological perspectives. The historical section examines the use of Imamate terminology in the periods of the Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.) and of hadith scholars. The hadith section explains the semantic status of these terms in the nature and reality of Imamate, identifying which is primary and which derivative. The theological section discusses weaknesses in theologians' definitions of Imamate arising from misidentification of its principal term. The study concludes that, within the semantic field of Imamate, semantic primacy belongs to hujja.
