Abstract
Political and social conditions after Imam al-Hasan al-Mujtaba's (A.S.) peace with Mu'awiya made the situation of the Shi'a distinct from preceding and later periods. The severe repression accompanying Mu'awiya's absolute rule has led some opponents of the antiquity of doctrinal Shi'ism to date its emergence after Imam al-Hasan's Imamate, alongside Ashura and later events, and to portray earlier followers of the Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.) as merely affective partisans. Examining Shi'i conditions, especially doctrinal Shi'ism, can therefore illuminate this obscure period and answer the denial of its earlier existence. As under Imam Ali (A.S.), believers in doctrinal Shi'ism existed during Imam al-Hasan's Imamate, but political and social constraints prevented overt activity and forced them into political isolation. Their intellectual and doctrinal ties with Imam al-Hasan nevertheless continued, and movements such as that of Hujr b. Adi attest to the continuing intellectual life of doctrinal Shi'ism.
