Abstract
Qur'an 5:55 is among the principal verses used to establish the wilaya of Imam Ali (A.S.); it was revealed concerning his donation of a ring while bowing in prayer. Shi'i reports call it the Verse of Wilaya. Sunni scholars have adopted different positions toward this verse. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this study explains the approaches of several leading Sunni scholars to hadith authentication and applies their criteria to the chains reporting the verse's revelation concerning Imam Ali (A.S.). The findings show that several chains of these revelation reports satisfy hadith criteria articulated by Ibn Taymiyya and al-Albani. Moreover, applying Sunni methods of hadith takhrij and examining how five Sunni scholars treated the reports on the verse's occasion of revelation establishes the reliability of several transmission routes. Such use of Sunni hadith and takhrij criteria has received comparatively little qualitative or quantitative attention in studies of the Verse of Wilaya.
