Abstract
The Verse of Purification is one of the most important verses of the Holy Qur’an in clarifying the position of the Prophet’s Household (Ahl al-Bayt) — peace be upon him and his family — and in establishing their infallibility and Imamate. For this reason, throughout the centuries and also in recent years, certain Sunni authors have attempted to present alternative interpretations of this verse, aiming to redefine its referents and implications so as to cast doubt on the theological foundations of Shi‘a belief. Among the recent studies on this topic is an article entitled *“The Verse of Purification Between Qur’anic Context and Blameworthy Interpretation.”* The author of that article, adopting a critical approach toward the Shi‘a view, has sought—through appeal to the context of the surrounding verses and through linguistic analysis—to include the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) among “the People of the House (Ahl al-Bayt).” Furthermore, he interprets the divine will in this verse as a legislative (tashrī‘ī) will, thereby denying that the verse indicates infallibility. The present study, employing an analytical-critical method and relying on authoritative Sunni sources and principles, examines and critiques the key arguments presented in that article. The findings show that: first, based on authentic and widely transmitted narrations found in both Sunni and Shi‘a sources, the occasion of revelation of the Verse of Purification pertains exclusively to the Companions of the Cloak (Aṣḥāb al-Kisāʾ), while the weakly transmitted reports suggesting inclusion of the wives lack credibility.
